HMS Dragon Undergoes Maintenance in Eastern Mediterranean After Deployment to Cyprus

HMS Dragon, a Type-45 Destroyer of the Royal Navy, was dispatched to the Eastern Mediterranean to safeguard British personnel and infrastructure at RAF Akrotiri, the UK's sovereign base in Cyprus. This deployment followed an attack on the base. The ship had spent weeks in rapid repairs in Portsmouth to become seaworthy before leaving the UK.

Ahead of its departure, naval personnel worked around the clock to equip HMS Dragon with Sea Ceptor missiles and supplies. Defence Secretary John Healey stated that crews were working tirelessly, 22 hours a day, to prepare the vessel for its mission. The deployment highlights ongoing efforts to maintain UK military presence in the region amid regional tensions.

During a GB News broadcast, panellists Charlie Peters and Andrew Pierce discussed the ship's situation.

Andrew Pierce referred to HMS Dragon as "HMS Hopeless" while covering the news. Charlie Peters expressed concern over this description, stating it risked undermining the Royal Navy during the situation.

“I think we are a little bit at risk of taking down the Royal Navy amid this situation. These sailors have grafted quite an extraordinary feat to get that ship out. It's not their fault.”

Peters emphasized that the sailors achieved an extraordinary feat in getting the ship operational from Portsmouth in the available time. He noted that few other navies could have accomplished the same. He attributed the delays and maintenance issues to decades of poor procurement planning and ministerial decisions.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that HMS Dragon is currently undertaking a routine logistics stop and a short maintenance period in the Eastern Mediterranean. A spokesman explained that this pause allows the ship to take on provisions, optimize systems, and conduct maintenance.
