The House Oversight Committee on Tuesday set a September 2 deadline for Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz to participate in a videotaped transcribed interview about his connections to Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The letter followed Dershowitz's withdrawal from a voluntary interview originally scheduled for July 20, and Chairman James Comer said the panel will explore compulsory process if Dershowitz fails to appear.
Dershowitz represented Epstein in the financier's 2008 plea deal. The committee's yearlong bipartisan investigation has already conducted voluntary interviews with tech billionaire Bill Gates, former Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and former Clinton aide Doug Band.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers has also issued subpoenas to former Attorney General Pam Bondi, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Dershowitz stated in June 2026 on NewsNation that he is prepared to testify. "I'm very proud of my role in representing Epstein. I'm prepared to testify about everything," he said. He told The Harvard Crimson last week that his attorneys advised him against testifying due to unspecified legal prohibitions.
Dershowitz's counsel provided no explanation when contacted on July 15 and 17, 2026. Comer called the lack of response unacceptable and said the panel will not tolerate further delay.
