Hundreds March in Kathmandu Pride Event on June 13

Hundreds of members of Nepal's LGBTQ+ community and their supporters marched through the streets of Kathmandu on Saturday to mark Pride Month. The rally took place on June 13, 2026. A participant appeared with face paint during the event, according to photographs from the scene.

The government elected in March under Prime Minister Balendra Shah established the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security. Abc News reported that the new ministry is the first Nepali government department created specifically to address issues affecting women and sexual minorities. Nepal became one of the first countries in Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

The country's 2015 constitution states there can be no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. A 2007 court decision directed the government to implement measures supporting LGBTQ+ people. Individuals who do not identify as female or male can select “third gender” on passports and other official documents.
