rediff.comIndia introduced an 85 percent ethanol fuel blend on Friday at a ceremony in New Delhi. The E85 fuel is part of the country's fuel-flex mobility program and is intended to reduce dependence on imported crude oil. India's Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, attended the launch.
On Thursday, Puri also unveiled India's first flex-fuel passenger vehicle produced by Maruti Suzuki.
Flex-fuel vehicles can run on ethanol-petrol blends ranging from E20 to E100. India can now produce ethanol from broken grains, agricultural waste, bamboo, and seaweed, the oil minister said. NITI Aayog classifies ethanol-based flex-fuel vehicles, including those using E85, as zero-emission vehicles.
The new fuel also produces near-zero particulate emissions compared with conventional petrol. The rollout aligns with India's broader goal of cutting crude imports. The country is the world's third-largest importer of crude oil.
