Israeli Government Actions Target Police Leadership and Judiciary
The Israeli government has made changes to police leadership and introduced measures affecting the judiciary and civil service. These steps follow more than one thousand days of conflict with groups including Hezbollah.
On April 20, Alex Sinclair, a novelist and lecturer, was detained by police in Modi’in after wearing a kippah displaying both Israeli and Palestinian flags. Officers removed the Palestinian flag from the kippah before returning it to him. Sinclair filed a complaint with the police internal-investigation unit.
The Israeli government has placed Itamar Ben-Gvir in charge of the police and appointed a settler to lead the Shin Bet security service. The summer session of the Knesset runs from May 10 to July and includes plans to fill additional oversight positions.
Baharav-Miara filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to require Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to explain his decision not to remove Ben-Gvir. The petition describes a system of pressure within the police force. Ben-Gvir has blocked the promotion of an officer who investigated Netanyahu and removed the Tel Aviv police commissioner.
Since Ben-Gvir took office in 2022, more than seven hundred Arab Israeli citizens have been killed in homicides, double the rate recorded the previous year. Border police units have been deployed in Jerusalem and Bedouin areas of the Negev, conducting raids and enforcing checkpoints.
The government has introduced more than eighty initiatives aimed at the judiciary and civil service, according to the Israel Democracy Institute. A government attorney referenced Greek mythology during an April 15 Supreme Court hearing on the Attorney General’s petition.
The Knesset passed legislation allowing the death penalty for Palestinian terrorists. Yohanan Plesner of the Israel Democracy Institute stated that professional civil servants are responding to multiple challenges to existing structures. Netanyahu has denied that the government is attacking democracy.
