Josh Kerr Runs Mile in 3:42.66 to Break 1999 World Record

Scotland's Josh Kerr clocked 3 minutes 42.66 seconds in the men's mile at the London Diamond League on Saturday, shaving 0.47 seconds off the mark held by Hicham El Guerrouj since 1999. He finished more than three seconds ahead of American runner Yared Nuguse, who recorded 3 minutes 45.69 seconds. Kerr's previous personal best in the mile was 3 minutes 45.34 seconds, set two years earlier.

He passed the 1,200-meter mark in 2 minutes 46.5 seconds and ran each of the final three 100-meter segments in 13.7 seconds, according to BBC News. The London Stadium hosted 60,000 spectators for the meet. Kerr received a $50,000 check for the record and wore a bespoke speed suit and spikes supplied by Brooks Running.

Kerr had announced the record attempt in late March as part of a project with sponsor Brooks Running called Project 222. BBC News reported that Kerr is the seventh British athlete to hold the men's mile world record and the first since Steve Cram in 1985. He is also an Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 meters from the 2024 Paris Games.

Australia's Jessica Hull won the 3,000 meters in 8 minutes 24.69 seconds, with teammate Rose Davies second in 8 minutes 25.38 seconds. Australia's Nicola Olyslagers won the high jump on countback after clearing 2.01 meters, ahead of Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh. Australia's Eleanor Patterson took third with 1.96 meters.

Australia's men's 4x100-meter relay team finished second in 38.00 seconds, and the women's team placed second in 43.08 seconds.
