Kenya High Court Orders Disclosure of Ebola Facility Agreement, Extends Ban on Quarantine Site
The court extended orders blocking any Ebola quarantine or treatment site and required the government to release the full agreement and health assessments for the proposed 50-bed facility at Laikipia Air Base.
Al JazeeraKenya’s High Court ordered the government to disclose the full agreement, health assessments, regulatory approvals, and operational protocols for a proposed 50-bed Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base. The same ruling extended conservatory orders that bar any Ebola quarantine, isolation, or treatment facility and prohibit admission of individuals exposed to the virus.
Hundreds of residents demonstrated in Nanyuki on Monday against the planned site.
Two people died from gunshot wounds during the unrest, according to Reuters, citing protest organizer Patrick Wahome and a security source. Kenya’s government has said it will proceed with the facility. Health Minister Aden Duale stated on Saturday that the project forms part of efforts to strengthen emergency response systems.
President William Ruto said the unit is comparable to existing facilities across 23 counties and would serve both Kenyans and foreign partners if needed. S. President Donald Trump requested support, citing long-standing health cooperation between the two countries.
The Katiba Institute, the Law Society of Kenya, and the main doctors’ union opposed the facility during Tuesday’s hearing, arguing that the agreement lacks transparency and that Kenya’s health infrastructure cannot safely manage the risks. The court had first suspended the project on Friday following a lawsuit that claimed the site could endanger public health.
