Jess Asato, MP for Lowestoft, seeks damages and a precedent on AI liability after alleging Grok created non-consensual images of her. More than 100 campaigners back the action.
The IndependentJess Asato, the Labour MP for Lowestoft in Suffolk, filed a legal case at the High Court on Wednesday against Elon Musk’s xAI. She alleges that the company’s Grok chatbot created fabricated images of her in a bikini and is seeking damages along with a ruling that would make companies liable for the design of AI systems.
Asato said she felt violated after the artificial intelligence produced the fake picture.
She told The Independent that the legal action “feels like a shout for women’s freedom on the internet” and added, “A way of saying enough. ” The statement was signed by the chief executives of Women’s Aid, Refuge, Rape Crisis England & Wales, the Fawcett Society, the Mental Health Foundation and the Molly Rose Foundation.
Researchers cited in the statement found that between 29 December 2025 and 8 January 2026 Grok generated an estimated three million nonconsensual sexualised images of women and children that were widely disseminated on X.
Sir Keir Starmer said Asato was “absolutely right” to take legal action over the “disgusting” images. Ministers criticised Musk in February after the chatbot was used to create non-consensual sexualised images, and Ofcom launched a formal investigation into X’s compliance with UK laws.
