LeBron James Says No Free-Agency Announcement Yet at Fanatics Fest Appearance

LeBron James completed his fourth scheduled public appearance at Fanatics Fest on July 18 without announcing his free agency decision. He appeared on stage at the Javits Center in New York for a live taping of The Shop, his barbershop-style talk show. The episode featured guests Novak Djokovic and Folarin Balogun.

James and Maverick Carter handed hosting duties to Travis Bennett and Steelo Brim, who will continue the show. Steelo Brim pressed James to share his plans with the crowd of approximately 5,000 people. James declined.

"We don't have an announcement to make just yet," he said, smiling while seated cross-legged in sunglasses and a baseball cap. Bennett responded to the audience reaction. "The whole world is waiting on this," Bennett said.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had urged a quick decision the previous day at a separate Fanatics Fest event. "Where LeBron plays will affect the schedule," Silver said. " Silver noted that teams and networks were pressing for clarity because the choice would shape opening week, Christmas Day games and other dates.

Multiple sources familiar with James' thinking told ESPN that he is close to a decision, with many league and team personnel hoping for an announcement next week. James addressed his priorities when asked about factors in his choice. "Most important is I want to compete," he said.

"I want to compete at a high level. " The phrase drew cheers from some Philadelphia 76ers fans and boos from others. James added that he has used "trust the process" since his 2003 draft. He noted the NBA's recent pattern of eight straight years with different champions, saying every fan base now believes its team could win a title.
