Lightning sign defenseman John Carlson to two-year, $17 million contract

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed defenseman John Carlson to a two-year contract on July 1, 2026. ESPN reported the deal carries an $8.5 million salary cap hit per year and totals $17 million. Carlson, 36, became an unrestricted free agent after failing to agree on terms with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes had acquired his negotiating rights from the Anaheim Ducks on June 27 in exchange for prospect Kyle Masters and a 2026 sixth-round pick. Carlson had been traded to Anaheim by the Washington Capitals during the 2025-26 season. He recorded 14 points in 16 regular-season games and six points in 12 playoff games with the Ducks.

Over 17 seasons with the Capitals, Carlson won the Stanley Cup in 2018 and accumulated 785 points in 1,159 career NHL games with a plus-112 rating. The Capitals had drafted him 27th overall in 2008 and he completed an eight-year contract with an $8 million average annual value.

The Lightning needed a right-side defenseman after losing Darren Raddysh in a sign-and-trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Raddysh, who posted 70 points in 73 games during the 2025-26 season, signed an eight-year contract with Toronto that carries an $8.5 million cap hit. ESPN reported Carlson was viewed as the top available offensive defenseman once Raddysh left. Speculation had linked the Lightning to Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, the prior season's Norris Trophy winner.

Werenski informed the Blue Jackets he was unlikely to re-sign after his contract expires in 2028, but he later issued a statement recommitting to Columbus and ended trade talks.
