Lions' Brian Branch Targeting December Return From Achilles Tear, With Possible PUP Risk

Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch suffered a torn Achilles in the fourth quarter of a 44-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 of the 2025 season. Branch landed awkwardly while attempting to break up a pass in the end zone and was carted off the field. He underwent surgery in December 2025.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said on June 11, 2026, that Branch has no setbacks in his recovery. " Campbell set December 2026 as the target for Branch's return. "Let's just go ahead and say December," Campbell said.

Campbell said there is a slim chance Branch could start the 2026 season on the physically unable to perform list. Campbell said the team will not rush Branch back. "I think you always want to know that your guys are healthy and that this is truly healed," Campbell said.

Campbell anticipated recovery would take at least eight to 12 months after the December 2025 surgery. The Lions held organized team activities in Allen Park, Michigan, on June 11, 2026. Branch, 24, was drafted by the Lions in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Alabama.

He started all 12 games in the 2025 season, recording 75 tackles, nine passes defended and five quarterback hits. Branch is a one-time Pro Bowler entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible for an extension.
