London City Lionesses Extend Contract for Captain Kosovare Asllani Despite Unlikely Return
The club has offered the 36-year-old Sweden international a one-year deal after she suffered a complex knee injury in March. The extension allows her to continue recovery while her prior contract was set to end this summer.

London City Lionesses have given captain Kosovare Asllani a one-year contract extension to support her recovery from a complex multi-ligament knee injury that includes an anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The club confirmed the injury in March. Asllani, 36, joined the team from AC Milan in June 2024 and her previous contract was due to expire in summer 2026.
BBC Sport reported that the new deal is intended to aid rehabilitation even though it is unlikely she will play again for the club. Asllani serves as captain of the Sweden national team and holds more than 200 caps. She contributed to London City Lionesses winning WSL 2 in 2024-25 and recorded two goals plus three assists across 19 Women's Super League appearances in the following season.
Midfielder Malou Marcetto also sustained multiple knee ligament tears during the final WSL match of the season and has shown positive early progress after surgery. London City Lionesses finished sixth in their first WSL campaign in 2025-26. The club is owned by US billionaire Michele Kang and operates independently of any men's team.
This month the side signed two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas from Barcelona along with Spain defender Mapi Leon, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Denmark defender Janni Thomsen and Germany forward Nicole Anyomi. The club is seeking one further attacking player.
