Authority negotiated a new contract that included work-rule changes and annual wage increases of 3% over three years. The remaining disagreement centers on a proposed fourth-year wage increase, with unions seeking 5% for the final year. A national vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen said no new negotiations had been scheduled and that the sides remain far apart.
The union official expressed regret over the situation.
A Nassau County executive and gubernatorial candidate said the strike resulted from a lack of leadership and poor relationships with union leaders. The official contrasted this approach with his own record of reaching agreements with workers. The same official also pointed to previous labor disputes involving nurses and corrections officers during the current administration.
Fox News Digital reached out to the governor's press office for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
