Abc NewsSenator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana placed third in the state's Republican primary on Saturday, receiving 24.8 percent of the vote with 99 percent of ballots counted. Representative Julia Letlow led with 44.8 percent, while state Treasurer John Fleming received 28.3 percent.
Letlow will advance to a primary runoff against Fleming. Cassidy has held the seat since 2015 and won re-election in 2020. He was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict President Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial.
" He added that insults only bothered him if they came from someone with character and integrity, and that people with character and integrity do not spend their time attacking people on the internet. Cassidy also stated that the country is not about one individual but about the welfare of all Americans and the Constitution.
President Donald Trump said it was "nice to see" the incumbent lose and declared Cassidy's political career effectively over. Letlow thanked Trump as "the best president this country has ever had" and said voters had sent a clear message that they want an "America First" candidate.
Trump backed Letlow in the primary after Cassidy voted to convict him in the second impeachment trial. The trial resulted in 57 senators voting to convict, falling short of the 60 votes needed for a guilty verdict. The other six Republican senators who voted to convict were Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, and Mitt Romney of Utah.
Most of those senators are no longer in office, with Cassidy marking the fifth confirmed exit.
