A Minneapolis man accused of assaulting Rep. Ilhan Omar with a syringe filled with apple cider vinegar and water during a January town hall is set to plead guilty to federal charges, according to a court filing. Anthony James Kazmierczak's attorney, John Fossum, stated in an April 2026 filing that Kazmierczak will change his plea to guilty after reaching a settlement with federal prosecutors.

The change-of-plea hearing is scheduled for May 7, 2026. Kazmierczak had pleaded not guilty in March 2026 to one federal count of assaulting a United States officer. The assault took place on January 27, 2026, at a town hall in Minneapolis where Omar was speaking.

Video from the event showed Kazmierczak rushing the stage as Omar called for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to step down and for ICE agents to leave Minnesota. Kazmierczak pulled out the syringe and attempted to douse Omar with the liquid before an officer intervened. In the video, Kazmierczak said, 'She’s not resigning,' referring to Noem.

' Omar was not injured and continued her town hall after Kazmierczak was arrested that day. Omar wrote on X: 'I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work.

I don’t let bullies win. Grateful to my incredible constituents who rallied behind me. ' The incident occurred weeks after Renee Good was killed by an ICE agent, which prompted Democratic leadership to call for federal agents to leave Minnesota.

Following the assault, Omar demanded the impeachment of Secretary Kristi Noem and the abolition of ICE after being attacked with the unknown liquid in the syringe. Kazmierczak has been held in custody since the incident. A magistrate judge ruled that the exceedingly serious and dangerous circumstances of the assault allegations make it impossible to ensure public safety if Kazmierczak is released on bail.

Kazmierczak was arrested and held in Hennepin County Jail on a third-degree assault charge after the incident. During the investigation, an FBI agent interviewed an associate of Kazmierczak who claimed Kazmierczak once said 'somebody should kill' Omar. United States Attorney Daniel N.

Rosen said: 'Assaultive behavior and acts of intimidation directed at officers and employees of the United States will not be tolerated. ' Fox News reported that the alleged assault heightened tensions between federal officials and Democratic state leaders following Good's killing.
