Michael Block trailed the leader by eight shots after two rounds of the US Senior Open at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The 50-year-old teaching professional from Mission Viejo, California, spoke to reporters Friday and outlined his approach for the final two rounds. Block said his play through 36 holes had been inconsistent.
“I haven’t made very many putts, maybe any. The game’s been about a C; C is being generous,” he stated. He added that the undulating greens, with speeds ranging from 8 uphill to 13 or 14 downhill, had disrupted his feel and speed control.
Despite the deficit, Block said he intends to press for a strong weekend score. “I’m not here to finish 40th. I’ve made the cut, which was obviously very important, but at the same time, I’m going to go out there tomorrow, and I’m going to fire,” he said.
He plans to attack pins while avoiding the right side of tucked locations three yards from the edge. Block stated he has received a warm welcome from fellow competitors. Yardbarker.com reported that he remains focused on posting a low number Saturday to position himself for contention on Sunday.
