Mistral AI's Le Chat Rebrand to Vibe Sparks 'Le Chaton Fat' Meme
A fictional AI model called Le Chaton Fat has become a running joke in tech circles following Mistral's chatbot rebrand. The gag references U.S. restrictions on Anthropic models.
uctoday.comA fictional AI model called Le Chaton Fat has become a running joke across social media and tech forums after French startup Mistral rebranded its chatbot Le Chat as Vibe. The meme emerged in the days after Mistral held its first-ever summit in Paris last month, where CEO Arthur Mensch announced the name change.
U.S. Government barred foreign entities and individuals from using Anthropic's cybersecurity-focused models Mythos 5 and Fable 5. Meme creators positioned Le Chaton Fat as a European alternative to the restricted models. Ethan Mollick, professor and co-director of the Generative AI Lab at the Wharton School, posted on X on Monday that the meme was "leaking to the outside world" and that he expected questions about "Mistral's new ginormous cat model with infinite benchmark scores" at his next corporate meeting.
A tweet from @heyglif on June 15, 2026, stated: "The French Goverment needs to STOP Le Chaton Fat before it's too late. " A post from @vskblue on June 16, 2026, also referenced the meme. French technology news outlet Numerama stated that Le Chaton Fat does not exist and is an elaborate running gag that originated in Mistral's online community.
Mensch attended the Paris Air Forum in Paris on June 12, 2026. Mistral AI did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comment.
