Researchers have identified Colobus congoensis, known locally as likweli, through morphological and genetic analysis of specimens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The primate is the fifth new African monkey species documented in 75 years and occupies a limited range in Lomami National Park.
e360.yale.eduA new monkey species has been formally described as Colobus congoensis after morphological and genetic analysis of specimens collected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The primate, known locally as likweli, measures about 1.3 metres in length and weighs around 7 kilograms. Its light-coloured skin around the mouth and beneath the nose distinguishes it from other African colobus species.
Researchers recorded 114 observations of the species, including 25 vocalisations, between 2018 and 2022 in the dense canopy of Lomami National Park. Scientists first noted the animal in 2008 when a survey team on the Lomami river captured a partial photograph high in the trees. A second sighting occurred in November 2018.
In 2021 several monkeys killed for bushmeat were confiscated and provided to researchers for study. Genetic analyses showed that likweli split from its closest relative, Colobus satanas, roughly 4 to 5 million years ago. The populations remain separated by more than 1200 kilometres and several major rivers.
The species is known only from 1700 square kilometres of rainforest. Reaching the area requires a flight, motorcycle ride, two days of hiking and travel by dugout canoe. Likweli monkeys are hunted for bushmeat.
The research team has proposed that the species be listed as endangered. The team also recommends granting the monkey protected status under national law to prohibit hunting, including in the buffer zone around the park.
