MQ-9 Reaper Test Flies With AEW Radar Pods

A modified MQ-9 Reaper completed its first flight equipped with podded radar for airborne early-warning duties on May 19. The sortie resulted from a partnership between the manufacturer and Saab, which supplied the LoyalEye radar system. A full demonstration of the combined system is planned for next year.

The radar-equipped MQ-9 is designed to provide persistent look-down coverage over areas where crewed early-warning aircraft face limits in availability or risk. Officials note that the unmanned platform can remain aloft for extended periods at lower operating cost than traditional AEW&C jets.

One-way attack drones traveling long distances have increased the need for continuous airborne radar surveillance. Ground-based sensors often detect such threats only at short range, while aging crewed platforms have reduced numbers and require long runways.

The system is not intended to replace high-end command-and-control platforms such as the E-7 or E-2D. It is positioned as a lower-cost supplement that can fill coverage gaps or operate in higher-threat zones where manned aircraft would not be risked.
