Naomi Osaka wears Japanese-inspired robe at Wimbledon first-round match

Naomi Osaka walked onto No. 3 Court at the All England Club on Monday wearing a flowing, kimono-like robe with bell sleeves and three-dimensional embroidery of cranes and cherry blossoms. The outfit, created by Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi, was made from vintage Japanese bridal garments and kimono fabric and included a matching kanzashi hair ornament.

Osaka kept the robe on while receiving instructions from the chair umpire, then placed it on her chair before beginning warm-ups.

Match result Osaka defeated French player Elsa Jacquemot 6-1 7-5 in straight sets and will next face either Anastasia Gasanova or Emiliana Arango.

Design details Yagi told Vogue the garment was built around the concept of "Evolving Ceremony" and used detachable layers to comply with Wimbledon's all-white dress code. Osaka also wore a white dress underneath the robe that featured floral appliqués and jewellery from the Japanese brand Mikimoto.

Osaka told Vogue she did not feel limited by the colour restriction and viewed the all-white rule as an opportunity to highlight fabrics and textures. She added that each walk-on lets her bring spectators into her creative process. The 28-year-old has worn similarly elaborate outfits at other Grand Slam tournaments this year, including a gold ensemble at the French Open and a jellyfish-inspired look at the Australian Open.
