National intelligence director resigns, effective end of next month

The director of national intelligence resigned on Friday, with the departure effective at the end of next month. The letter to the president stated that the official must step away from public service to support a spouse undergoing treatment for an extremely rare form of bone cancer.

The principal deputy is expected to assume the duties on an interim basis. The outgoing director noted that the office had made significant progress while indicating that important work remains.

Senate confirmation outlook Any permanent replacement must be confirmed by the Senate Intelligence Committee. Committee members include a moderate Republican from Maine who has opposed several administration nominees and a Texas Republican who was recently passed over for an endorsement.

The panel's top Democrat said the position requires an experienced intelligence professional focused on foreign intelligence rather than domestic matters. Confirmation of the previous director had already presented challenges.

Other vacancies and relations Acting officials currently lead the Labor Department and Justice Department. The administration is also addressing disagreements with Senate Republicans over a proposed $1.8 billion fund and other spending items. Relations between the White House and the Senate Republican Conference have grown strained in recent months.
