Nigerian security agencies rescued all 46 pupils and staff kidnapped from three schools in Oyo state on May 15, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced on Friday. Le Monde reported that gunmen seized the group from schools in the Orire area. Nigeria's army had accused the gunmen of being Boko Haram jihadists.
Onanuga said some of the abductors were killed during the rescue and eight were arrested. He stated that the abductors had demanded the release of one member facing prosecution. Oyo ranks among Nigeria's most populous states, and its capital Ibadan serves as a major education hub, Le Monde reported.
