Nutritionist Avoids 11 Items at Costco Due to Household Size and Sodium Concerns

A nutritionist who shops regularly at Costco said she avoids 11 specific items despite enjoying other bulk purchases there. The nutritionist, who shops for herself and her husband, stated that large quantities of certain goods often go unused before spoiling or exceed her daily sodium limit of 1,500 milligrams.

She buys whole eggs rather than liquid egg whites, noting that whole eggs provide protein along with vitamins A, B6, B12, and D. Frozen breakfast sandwiches, skillets, and burritos are also avoided because some contain more than half of her recommended daily sodium intake.

Bulk fresh produce is skipped except for apples and oranges that last several weeks, with frozen fruits and vegetables purchased instead. Pre-made soups from Kirkland Signature are not purchased if any serving exceeds 20 percent of the daily recommended sodium value.

Multivitamins and other dietary supplements are not bought, as the nutritionist said a varied diet supplies necessary nutrients. She added that individual circumstances vary and that people whose healthcare providers recommend supplements may find value in buying them at the retailer.
