middleeasteye.netThe Oxford Union removed its president-elect after a tribunal determined the individual had engaged in electoral fraud by providing membership cards to non-members who then voted in the election. The president-elect, a postgraduate student at Exeter College, was scheduled to assume the role in Michaelmas term beginning in September.
The tribunal found the individual provided cards that allowed unauthorized voting, including for candidates described as Asian. The discovery occurred on March 6 when a candidate for the secretary's committee observed several students using other members' identification to cast ballots.
Tribunal documentation stated these voters were supporting the president-elect and other candidates. " A subsequent voice message inquiring whether the other individual still possessed "the cards" was described by the tribunal as particularly damning.
Witness testimony indicated one student received a membership card belonging to another person with instructions to vote for specific candidates including the president-elect. The president-elect faced seven charges in total, one of which involved allegedly threatening and intimidating the student who made the initial discovery to deter reporting the matter.
The penalties include a ban from standing in the upcoming Hilary term election, a permanent prohibition on nominating candidates or holding positions in the society, and suspension of membership until the end of Trinity term. The individual is also barred from serving on any Union committee except the consultative committee.
The president-elect rejected the findings and denied that any conspiracy existed. In a statement the individual said: "I strongly reject the findings against myself and deny that any conspiracy existed. " — president-elect (GB News) The president-elect has said an appeal will be pursued.
The individual cited difficulties preparing for the tribunal while in China during the university break, including time zone differences that limited coordination with Union representatives and securing witnesses. This marks the second consecutive year that an incoming president has been removed from office.
Last year the previous president-elect was ousted after appearing to celebrate the death of an American conservative influencer in a group chat. A fresh election for the presidency will be held on Monday.
The Oxford Union faced a free speech debate last month after reports that Tommy Robinson had been invited to participate in a debate on Islam scheduled for May 28. " The society has drawn attention in prior instances including the cancellation of a debate and an apology issued by a would-be president to the family of the conservative influencer.
