The UCLA emeritus professor will lead the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering after three decades in the United States.
South China Morning PostPei Qibing has been appointed chair professor and director of the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering at the University of Macau, according to the university’s website. Pei, an emeritus professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, spent 30 years in the United States before taking the Macau post.
He began his education at a small rural school on an island in the Yangtze River in Anhui province.
“Because the school did not have enough chairs, students needed to bring their own stools,” former classmate Wang Xianglong told local media in Tongling two years ago. Wang added that Pei and his elder sister attended the same class because the school lacked enough students to open separate classes for each year.
Wang said Pei was top of the class before enrolling in chemistry at Nanjing University in 1981.
