A match-worn number 10 shirt Pelé wore in the 1958 World Cup final will be sold in an online auction that opens June 29 and closes July 16, Sotheby's announced Tuesday. ” The jersey is the one Pelé wore in his first World Cup final. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, was 17 years old when he scored twice in Brazil’s 5-2 win against Sweden at Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm.

He remains the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final. Pelé died at age 82 in December 2022 of colon cancer. After the final he gave the handmade shirt to his roommate and teammate Dida. The shirt stayed with Dida’s family for decades, was later displayed in a Brazilian museum, and was acquired by its current anonymous owner in 2004.

Pelé’s first goal in the final came after he controlled the ball with his chest, flicked it over a Swedish defender, and scored. His second goal was a header near the end of the match. A public exhibition of the jersey begins July 1 at Sotheby’s Breuer building in New York.
