Philippine President Says Flood Control Corruption Probe Continues

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on July 4 that the government's review of flood control projects is not complete and that additional irregularities continue to surface. Speaking at a press conference in Vancouver during a four-day official visit to Canada, Marcos stated that the administration has not yet finished its work.

"I cannot say that we have done enough because we are not done yet. Unfortunately, the more we look, the more we find," he said.

Background on the Review Marcos first raised the issue during his 2025 State of the Nation Address, when he pledged accountability for officials and contractors linked to defective or incomplete flood control projects. The administration later published a list of such projects and their contractors.

Several officials have resigned amid the review, and a former House speaker also stepped down. Former appropriations committee chair Zaldy Co left the country and is now a fugitive after arrest warrants were issued in connection with the projects.

Marcos noted that the problems predated his term, which began in 2022, and said former President Rodrigo Duterte had acknowledged the issue but took no action. He added that changing attitudes toward entitlement remains difficult. A number of current and former senators have been jailed in cases tied to the projects.

Marcos did not directly address calls for his resignation over the pace of the investigation.
