Clinics affiliated with Planned Parenthood began billing Medicaid again on July 5 for services such as contraception and screenings for sexually transmitted infections. The payments had been blocked for one year under a provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The restored access returns a revenue stream that previously exceeded $800 million annually for the organization. More than half of its patients use Medicaid coverage, according to the organization.
Background on the funding restriction The restriction was enacted through the budget reconciliation process last year and could not be extended beyond one year under Senate rules. Anti-abortion organizations had urged lawmakers to renew the measure before it lapsed.
Action assigned lawmakers failing grades on its report card and called for renewed restrictions. Its president stated that pro-life voters want health-care funds directed to providers that do not perform abortions. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said the lapse reversed prior progress and urged inclusion of an extension in a future reconciliation bill.
Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated plans to begin work on another reconciliation measure, while some Senate Republicans have expressed reluctance to pursue the issue before the midterm elections. Nearly 30 Planned Parenthood health centers closed during the funding restriction period.
