A new CBS News/YouGov poll shows that 63 percent of Republicans approve of President Trump's handling of inflation, down from 74 percent in March. Overall public approval of his approach to inflation stands at 27 percent, down from 33 percent in the prior survey.

Inflation reached 3.8 percent for the 12 months ending in April, above the Federal Reserve's 2 percent target. The U.S. added 115,000 jobs in April, exceeding most forecasts.

The poll found widespread pessimism about the economy.

Sixty-five percent of respondents described it as "uncertain," 63 percent called it "struggling," and 40 percent said "unfair." Only 12 percent described the economy as "rebounding" or "stable." The survey also recorded anxiety over artificial intelligence. About two-thirds of respondents said they fear the technology will eliminate jobs.

Republicans approve of President Trump's job performance, compared with 37 percent among the general public. Thirty-five percent of respondents said Democrats have a better approach to the economy, while 31 percent favored President Trump and Republicans. The poll was conducted May 13-15 among 2,064 adults and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

We'll call it a little pain," Trump told Fox News' Bret Baier last week. "I want to do the job right. If it takes another four weeks, think of it, we were in Vietnam for 19 years, I'm doing this for two, two-and-a-half months." The survey attributes part of the economic unease to fallout from the war in Iran and the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, which has driven up gas prices. President Trump has stated that the economic impact has been less severe than anticipated and that the action was necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
