President Trump Scheduled to Attend Senate Republican Lunch on Voting Bill

President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend a closed-door Senate GOP luncheon on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. It will be his first such appearance in more than a year. Trump has pressed Republican senators for months to advance the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated Tuesday that the bill lacks the votes to pass under current rules and that eliminating the filibuster is not realistic in the 53-47 Senate. Trump has also blocked confirmation of one of his own nominees, sought funding for a White House ballroom project, and linked renewal of a surveillance law to passage of the voting bill.

He endorsed primary challengers against Texas Sen.

John Cornyn and Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy; both incumbents lost their primaries. Florida Sen. Rick Scott extended the invitation to Trump without first informing Thune. On Monday, Scott sent colleagues a letter urging weekly votes on versions of the SAVE America Act.

Thune said he learned of the visit from Scott and hopes the meeting focuses on unity before the midterms. Cornyn stated Tuesday that Republicans must align to win the midterms. Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said he hopes the session will be conciliatory.

Most senators have not yet been briefed on the Iran agreement.
