PWHL Releases Protected Lists Ahead of Expansion Draft

The league published protection lists from its eight existing teams on Wednesday. Four new teams will select five players each from the unprotected pool beginning Friday.

Seattle protected forwards Alex Carpenter and Hannah Murphy along with defender Anna Wilgren. Minnesota protected goalie Maddie Rooney. Boston protected defenders Megan Keller and Haley Winn along with goalie Aerin Frankel. Ottawa protected forward Rebecca Leslie, defender Ronja Savolainen and goalie Gwyneth Philips.

The four new teams in Detroit, Las Vegas, San Jose and Hamilton, Ontario, will each sign five players to foundational contracts during the three-day Phase 2 period that opens Friday. Existing teams can lose no more than three players each. New York protected forwards Sarah Fillier, Kristyna Kaltounkova and Casey O'Brien.

Montreal protected forwards Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey along with goalie Ann-Renee Desbiens. Vancouver protected forward Sarah Nurse, defender Sophie Jaques and goalie Emerance Maschmeyer.

Minnesota signed Kelly Pannek and Taylor Heise to three-year contracts. Toronto signed defender Renata Fast and goalie Raygan Kirk to three-year deals while also protecting defender Ella Shelton. Pannek led the league with 16 goals and 33 points this season and is one of three finalists for the Billie Jean King MVP award.
