R&A to Enforce Fan Code of Conduct at 2026 Open Championship After Past Disruptions
The R&A said it will enforce its fan guidelines at next week's event at Royal Birkdale. Organizers expect more than 300,000 spectators. The move follows recent incidents of unruly behavior at major tournaments.

The R&A announced it will strictly enforce its fan code of conduct at the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Organizers expect crowds to exceed 300,000 at the final major of the PGA Tour schedule. R&A CEO Mark Darbon said the guidelines aim to preserve the event's traditions.
"The atmosphere at the Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship," Darbon stated. "Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience.
The Open Commitment isn't about changing what makes the Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure the Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all," he added. The reminder comes after past incidents of disruptive fan behavior.
In 2023 at Royal Liverpool, champion Brian Harman faced unruly conduct. At the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, multiple patrons were escorted out for jeering champion Wyndham Clark's shots. Clark said after that event that the hostility stood out.
"Man, they definitely didn't want me to win. It's pretty rare in an Open Championship or a major to have fans kind of boo against your shots or cheer for bad shots," Clark stated.
