Serena Williams will face Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon at approximately 12 p.m. ET on Centre Court. The 44-year-old American enters as a wildcard after announcing her return to professional tennis on June 1.
She has not played singles at the tournament since 2022. Williams won seven Wimbledon titles between 2002 and 2016. Joint, a 20-year-old Australian, is competing in her second Wimbledon. The winner advances to face either Alexandra Eala or Renata Zarazúa in the second round on July 2.
Williams and her sister Venus will also compete in doubles as a wildcard entry. Their first match is scheduled for July 2. The match will be the third on Centre Court, following Townsend-Swiatek and Blockx-Zverev.
It will air on ESPN. Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, defeated Teodora Kostovic 6-2, 6-3 in her opening match. Sabalenka rated her performance eight out of 10. Jessica Pegula defeated Darja Vidmanova 7-5, 6-3.
