Seven Wildlife Moments Featured in 2025 Nature Photography Contest
The 2025 Nature Photography Contest included a category for humorous wildlife images, with entries from various global locations. Forbes reported on seven such moments, highlighting photographs of animals in unexpected situations. These images showcase the skills of photographers and provide insights into animal behaviors in their natural habitats.
citizen.co.zaThe Nature Photography Contest is one of the world's leading competitions for wildlife imagery and features a category dedicated to funny or unexpected animal moments. Forbes reported that the 2025 edition highlighted seven such instances, captured in diverse locations including Kenya and North Carolina.
This category emphasizes unscripted animal behaviors, offering a lighter perspective on wildlife photography alongside more serious entries.
In the first highlighted moment, titled 'Seatbelt Check' and photographed by Graeme Guy, a mother Masai giraffe and her calf were observed in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The image shows the giraffe appearing to inspect a low-flying safari plane during its landing approach.
The Masai giraffe, a subspecies found in Kenya and Tanzania, can reach up to 18 feet in height and is known for its irregular coat pattern and quiet communication through infrasound.
The second moment, 'Good Grief' by Angela J. Sanchez, was captured at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. It depicts an American black bear soaking wet and shaking off water, resembling a facepalm gesture. The American black bear is the most common bear species in North America, with a dense population in this refuge, and they are adept swimmers that often seek water sources after emerging from winter dormancy in spring.
The third featured image, 'The Performer' by Trevor LaClair, shows a Galápagos penguin on the islands off Ecuador's coast. The photograph captures the penguin in a pose with flippers outstretched and beak upward, during a routine preening behavior. The Galápagos penguin is the only species found north of the equator and is the smallest in the Northern Hemisphere, endemic to this region.
Forbes noted that while only these three moments were detailed in their report, the contest included seven in total from the Funny Nature category. These images demonstrate the combination of skill and timing required in wildlife photography, as photographers must be present at precise moments.
