Shai Gilgeous-Alexander heads a group of 23 players who committed to Team Canada for the next three summers. The Canadian men's basketball team announced the initial roster on June 1, 2026, for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics. Canada will open World Cup qualifying next month against Puerto Rico and Jamaica in Ontario.

An additional qualifier is scheduled for Quebec City on August 31, 2026. Gilgeous-Alexander will be joined by Luguentz Dort, RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks, Bennedict Mathurin and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Jamal Murray and Andrew Wiggins were left off the roster.

First-year coach Gordie Herbert and general manager Rowan Barrett set the new requirement that players must commit for three years to remain eligible for the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. "If guys don't commit this summer, they're not in," Herbert said. Herbert said past teams focused on getting the best individual players.

"To a certain extent, in the past, we used to say with the national team, get our best players to play. It's not enough," he said. " Canada earned bronze at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and reached the quarterfinals at the 2024 Olympics before losing to France.
