Shane van Gisbergen Wins Sonoma NASCAR Cup Race for Second Straight Year

Shane van Gisbergen won the NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, June 28, 2026. The Trackhouse Racing driver started sixth in his No. 97 Chevrolet and led 74 of the final 83 laps on the 1.99-mile road course north of San Francisco.

Chase Briscoe finished second, 0.357 seconds behind. Ty Gibbs, Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell completed the top five. The win was van Gisbergen’s second of the 2026 season and his eighth career Cup Series victory on road or street courses.

He broke a tie with Chase Elliott for the active lead in that category and moved into a tie with Tony Stewart for second on the all-time list. Jeff Gordon holds the record with nine. Van Gisbergen said after the race that the car had been difficult in practice.

“We were really bad yesterday, and these guys did an amazing job turning this car into a winner,” he said. Tyler Reddick finished 36th, four laps down, after a power steering failure. Alex Bowman placed 10th and advanced to the In-Season Challenge as the 32nd seed despite missing four prior races with vertigo.

Denny Hamlin finished 26th but also advanced after Carson Hocevar spun him from seventh place on a restart with 46 laps left. Ty Dillon dropped to 35th after losing power steering with 15 laps remaining. NASCAR returns to Chicagoland Speedway on July 5 for a 400-mile Cup Series race, the first there in seven years.
