South Korean President Lee Calls for Public Input on Special Probe Bill

The bill addresses allegations that indictments against Lee were based on fabricated evidence during the previous administration led by Yoon Suk Yeol. Proceedings in Lee's cases were suspended or postponed after he took office in June 2025. The ruling party proposed the bill last week, which would mandate an independent investigation into suspicions of fabricated probes and evidence in multiple cases, including a real estate development scandal.

The bill would enable a special counsel to take over Lee's cases from the prosecution and decide whether to proceed. It also grants the president authority to appoint the counsel from three recommended candidates.

Ihk-pyo, senior presidential secretary for political affairs, spoke at a press briefing on May 4, 2026, quoting President Lee. Hong stated that Lee urged the ruling party to decide the bill's timing and procedures through public input and careful deliberation.

Hong described the special counsel probe as necessary, noting that a parliamentary inspection had exposed illegal acts and unjust investigations under the previous administration. Hong added that public understanding of the need for the probe has formed.

Opposition lawmakers have stated that the bill could provide grounds for the special counsel to drop charges against Lee.

Lee faced trials on various charges before assuming office, with cases suspended thereafter. The proposed probe aims to examine the prosecution's actions under the prior administration. Stakeholders affected include political parties, the judiciary, and the public, with potential implications for ongoing legal proceedings.
