Southampton Coach Apologizes for Spying on Rivals During Play-Offs
Tonda Eckert admitted responsibility for the club’s breach of EFL rules that resulted in expulsion from the Championship play-off final. Southampton also received a four-point deduction for next season.
The IndependentSouthampton were removed from the Championship play-off final last month after a staff member was caught filming an opponent’s training session. The club also admitted filming training sessions of Oxford United in December and Ipswich Town in April.
The violations led to expulsion from the final and a four-point deduction at the start of next season. On Tuesday the club owner stated that the head coach would not be dismissed.
In an eight-minute video posted on the club’s social media account, the 33-year-old coach apologized to supporters, players and rival clubs. He said he holds responsibility for actions by himself and his staff. The coach described differing practices in other European leagues, noting that training sessions are routinely observed by media and opponents in Italy and Germany.
He added that none of the footage affected match outcomes. He explained the specific reasons for each incident: checking whether Oxford United had altered formation, reviewing Ipswich Town’s session at a neutral site, and confirming whether a Middlesbrough player would be available.
The Football Association is examining the coach’s conduct to determine whether separate charges for bringing the game into disrepute are warranted.
