Stark County man gets 20 years for child sexual abuse material offenses
A previously convicted sex offender from Stark County, Ohio, received a 20-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to child pornography charges. The term adds to his prior state sex-offense record and triggers mandatory sex-offender registration and supervision requirements upon release.
CANTON, Ohio — A Stark County man previously convicted of a sex offense received a 20-year federal prison sentence May 14 for possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The defendant, identified in the Justice Department release as a repeat offender, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to charges that included receipt and distribution of child sexual abuse material. The sentence matches the statutory maximum for the count of conviction and runs concurrent with any undischarged state term.
The case involved images and videos depicting minors under 12 years old. Federal sentencing guidelines calculations accounted for the volume of material, the defendant’s prior sex-offense conviction, and use of a computer, producing an advisory range that supported the 240-month term imposed by the court.
The new sentence changes the defendant’s status from pretrial detention to immediate commitment to the Bureau of Prisons. Upon completion of the term he faces a lifetime of supervised release that includes restrictions on internet access, proximity to schools and parks, and mandatory participation in sex-offender treatment.
The conviction also triggers sex-offender registration under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, with failure to register carrying its own federal felony penalties.
Downstream, the ruling requires the U.S. Probation Office to prepare a detailed supervision plan before release and obligates the defendant to surrender all devices capable of accessing the internet. The sentence also contributes to the Department of Justice’s ongoing enforcement priority targeting repeat offenders who possess or distribute child sexual abuse material; the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio has secured multiple sentences exceeding 15 years in similar cases since 2023.
Courts must now update the national sex-offender registry within 72 hours of the defendant’s release from prison.
This sentencing follows a string of federal prosecutions in Ohio that rely on prior state convictions to enhance federal penalties. The original federal complaint was filed after a forensic examination of devices seized under a search warrant that cited the defendant’s earlier registration as a sex offender.
