Base Power launched two years ago in Texas. The company builds a virtual power plant using residential batteries that start at 25 kilowatt-hours. Customers must buy electricity from Base Power rather than purchase the batteries outright.
In Illinois the company's rates stand 25 percent below those of utility ComEd. Base Power currently operates more than 500 megawatt-hours of battery storage in Texas. PJM paused applications for new generating sources in 2022 and reopened the queue in April 2025.
Base Power announced a $1 billion funding round led by Addition in October 2025. That round followed a $200 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Valor Equity Partners in April 2025. “We are deploying capacity behind the meter at the residential home, where an interconnection already exists, so we don’t wait in the interconnection queue,” Zach Dell, Base Power’s founder and CEO, told Canary Media.
