Striker scores then receives red card in U.S. World Cup win

Folarin Balogun scored the opening goal and was later sent off with a straight red card as the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in a World Cup match on Wednesday. The 24-year-old forward pounced on a deflected ball near the edge of the area to give the U.S. the lead.

About 20 minutes later, he was dismissed after his right foot made contact with Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović during a challenge.

Match outcome and suspension The United States advanced to the last 16 for the first time in 24 years. Midfielder Malik Tillman sealed the result with a late free-kick. Balogun will miss the next match against Belgium on Monday. A U.S. Soccer spokesperson confirmed the suspension cannot be appealed under FIFA rules.

Reactions from team officials Head coach Mauricio Pochettino said the contact was accidental. "For me it is never a red card," he stated after the match. Midfielder Tyler Adams suggested a yellow card would have been more appropriate. "I think it is a yellow card," Adams said.
