Leah Stewart, a 35-year-old mother of one and high school assistant principal from Sydney, was attacked by what is believed to have been a 12-foot great white shark at Coogee Beach on the morning of June 13, 2026. New York Post reported that she suffered bites to her arms and legs and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Stewart was placed into a medically induced coma for nearly two weeks.
Her arm was amputated and she underwent multiple surgeries, according to New York Post. In a statement released Sunday, her brother Joshua Stewart said she has experienced difficulty sleeping since the incident. He added that messages from family, community members in Australia and New Zealand, and people around the world have provided her with comfort and strength.
A GoFundMe campaign for her medical expenses has raised more than $500,000. Joshua Stewart said the family plans to respond to supporters once a technical issue with the page is resolved. "Leah is beyond overwhelmed at the amazing support she has received and that her story has resonated with so many people," he said.
