About 15,000 people marched through central Tokyo on Saturday and Sunday, waving rainbow flags and calling for equality during Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2026. Participants braved rain during the procession. Organizers estimated that 274,000 people attended the two-day event, which also included shows, workshops and talk events.
Over 200 companies and organizations took part. The theme of this year’s event was “Equal rights today. ” Tokyo Rainbow Pride is one of Asia’s largest LGBTQ+ rights events. Japan remains the only Group of Seven nation that does not recognize same-sex marriage.
Public support for marriage equality in Japan has reached about 67%.
