NewsweekPresident Trump arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a three-day summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He was greeted on the tarmac by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng after Air Force One landed. A formal welcoming ceremony was held outside the Great Hall of the People, where the two leaders reviewed an honor guard.
Trump posted a video on Truth Social of himself saluting as a brass band played the U.S. national anthem. The leaders later stopped for a photograph outside the Temple of Heaven.
Chinese officials also met with U.S. business leaders traveling with Trump, including the chief executives of Nvidia and Tesla. Trump has said he will raise U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, which Chinese officials claim as their territory. The summit occurs as the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, a Chinese partner, continues and the Strait of Hormuz has come close to closure. That waterway carries one-fifth of global oil and roughly half of China’s crude imports.
Trump and Chinese officials are expected to address Iran policy along with bilateral differences on trade, technology and human rights.
The three-day summit continues with further closed-door discussions on Friday. Newsweek contacted the White House for comment by email but did not receive a response.
