The Trump administration allocated $750,000 to charter the Titaina Explorer trimaran to evacuate one American woman from Pitcairn Island after she may have been exposed to hantavirus aboard the Dutch MV Hondius cruise liner in April 2026. U.S. assistance for her removal.
The Titaina Explorer, owned by a French citizen, departed Pitcairn Island on June 5, 2026, for the approximately 1,400-mile voyage to Easter Island, which can take up to 10 days depending on boat speed and weather. The woman was not symptomatic at the time of the evacuation arrangements, and the final cost of the operation remained undetermined as of June 11 because the effort was still underway.
French Polynesian authorities had rejected the woman’s transit through Tahiti because she had not disclosed her potential hantavirus exposure when she passed through the island earlier.
Pitcairn Island has about 50 inhabitants, no airport, and limited maritime access, which extended the time required to arrange transport. The MV Hondius continued sailing in the South Atlantic after the woman disembarked, and some passengers later became ill with at least three deaths reported. The woman had no known political or celebrity connections.
U.S. diplomats and citizens from the Middle East since the start of the Iran war and preparations for possible evacuations from Ebola-stricken countries. These expenses reduced the State Department’s emergency fund, known as the K Fund, to its lowest balance in seven years.
U.S. officials showed the State Department considering transfers of up to $50 million into the K Fund, with $35 million from the embassy security, construction and maintenance budget and $15 million from the diplomatic programming account. No decision on the transfers had been made as of June 11.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the case involves medical privacy laws. One official said the department could also ask Congress to replenish the fund and stated that it remained “well positioned” to support Americans needing assistance.
