BBC NewsTalks between the United States and Iran continued through Pakistani mediators on Monday after Iran responded to the latest U.S. proposal. Iranian officials said their concerns had been conveyed to the American side and that exchanges were ongoing.
U.S. forces began air strikes on Iran on 28 February. A ceasefire intended to allow talks has largely been observed despite occasional exchanges of fire. Iran has continued to control the Strait of Hormuz, closing the waterway that carries about 20 percent of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas. The U.S. side has enforced a blockade of Iranian ports to press for agreement on its terms.
U.S. naval blockade, guarantees against further attacks, compensation for war damage, and emphasis on Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials set five conditions in response, including a requirement that Iran keep only one nuclear site in operation and transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the United States.
The U.S. side also suggested a 20-year suspension of Iran's nuclear programme.
