U.S. Tests AI Real-Time Arabic-English Translation in African Lion 26 Exercise
Radio frequency operators from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa and Royal Moroccan Armed Forces validated a multi-language artificial intelligence capability delivering real-time Arabic-to-English translation over MPU5 radios integrated into the Mobile Ad Hoc Network-Cloud High Mobility Radio system on May 4 2026 in Agadir Morocco. thehindu.comU.S. and partner forces validated a multi-language artificial intelligence system that provides real-time Arabic-to-English translation during African Lion 26 at Southern Zone Headquarters in Agadir, Morocco, on May 4 2026.
The test involved radio frequency transmission operators from the 355th Communications Squadron of the 355th Wing, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa G6 Directorate, and a Royal Moroccan Armed Forces communications service member. They used the capability over MPU5 radios integrated into the Mobile Ad Hoc Network-Cloud High Mobility Radio system.
African Lion 26 is U.S. Africa Command's largest annual joint exercise. It ran from April 20 to May 8 2026 and was hosted in Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia. The exercise included more than 5,600 civilian and military personnel from over 40 nations.
The validation advances a proof-of-concept that links allied and partner sensors into a shared common operational picture. Prior exercises relied on traditional human translation and separate national networks. The new AI system now enables direct real-time language conversion within the tactical radio network.
The change took effect for the duration of the African Lion 26 exercise and demonstrated expanded connectivity for partner-led operations.
The operational delta triggers immediate follow-on requirements for participating nations to assess integration of the AI translation node into their own communication architectures before the next iteration of the exercise. U.S. Africa Command must now compile sensor-connection performance data from the shared common operational picture to inform future procurement decisions on Mobile Ad Hoc Network-Cloud High Mobility Radio systems.
African partner militaries gain a documented template for requesting equivalent AI language tools through existing security cooperation channels, which in turn requires U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa to schedule additional interoperability testing cycles in 2027.
This is the first documented validation of AI-driven real-time translation inside the MPU5 radio architecture during African Lion. The annual exercise, led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa, focuses on strengthening collective security capabilities of the United States, African nations and global allies through innovation and partner-led regional security initiatives.
