Some Uber riders have reported that fares appear higher when they select an American Express card as their payment method in the app. These observations have led to accusations that the company's pricing algorithms may adjust costs based on the chosen payment option.

The reports have circulated on platforms including Reddit, Instagram, YouTube, and credit-card forums. A viral video showed an UberX ride in Atlanta priced at $33.05 with an American Express card selected, dropping to $20.33 after switching to a Visa card.

Users have also noted similar price increases when using Uber Cash credits, Uber One memberships, gift-card balances, or business profiles. Uber stated to Fortune that prices are not personalized and that it does not set prices based on credit or debit card brand, account balance, or battery level.

explained that it collects certain data to personalize promotions, such as offering discounts to inactive users, but does not use that for fare pricing. The company attributed fare variations to its dynamic pricing model, which updates in real time every few seconds based on factors like location, demand, traffic conditions, driver availability, and estimated time and distance.

A spokesperson for Uber told SFGate in an April 2025 story that the pricing technology does not set different prices according to payment type. American Express offers Uber credits as a perk for certain cardholders, providing up to $200 annually in Uber Cash, distributed as $15 monthly plus a $20 December bonus.

To redeem, users must add an eligible American Express card, select it, and enable Uber Cash. The terms indicate that American Express shares card information, including type, with Uber for benefit fulfillment.

and Historical Complaints One Reddit

user wrote that the $15 monthly credit benefit is undermined if rides cost an additional $15 more. Another user reported a 17% to 27% increase in an airport ride estimate after switching to an American Express card from a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, with the price dropping back when reverting to Visa.

Similar complaints date back to 2017, when forum users on FlyerTalk discussed rides becoming 13% to 17% more expensive after linking an American Express card. Users have also claimed higher fares when using gift cards or having low battery levels. A Bay Area resident said fares were higher nine times out of 10 after loading gift cards compared to a spouse's app for the same route.

In 2023, a Belgian newspaper tested two phones and found a ride quote of €17.56 on a device with 12% battery versus €16.60 on one with 84% battery. Uber denied using battery level for fare calculations, though a former Uber economist previously stated that low-battery users were more willing to accept surge pricing, according to Vice.

The company reiterated to Fortune that it does not use battery information or other technical characteristics for pricing or promotions.
