UK Ranks Low in European Prostate Cancer Survival, Expert Warns of Need for Screening

The surgeon presented data indicating that implementing a nationwide screening program could reduce mortality by enabling earlier detection.

A charity's screening initiative from 2022 to 2025 tested 12,857 men aged 40 to 80 using Prostate Specific Antigen blood tests. The program identified 183 cases of prostate cancer, with most participants showing no symptoms. Of those diagnosed, four-fifths required aggressive treatment, highlighting the potential for undetected cases without screening.

The UK diagnoses about 63,000 new prostate cancer cases each year, resulting in 13,000 deaths. Nearly half of cases are found at advanced stages, contributing to higher mortality rates. The surgeon noted that preventing one prostate cancer death requires testing 293 men, compared to 337 women for breast cancer in certain age groups.

Shadow Communities Secretary Sir James Cleverly has advocated for a national prostate cancer screening program. He stated that early treatment saves lives and improves quality of life, calling for targeted screening for high-risk groups.
