United States forward says knockout stage brings different mindset

United States forward Folarin Balogun said the atmosphere around the World Cup has changed now that the knockout stages have begun. Balogun spoke to reporters before Sunday's practice session in Irvine, California. He said the single-elimination format creates a different mindset.

"I can feel the difference in just the atmosphere," Balogun said. The team finished atop Group D. Balogun has scored two goals in the tournament and forced an own goal against Australia.

He said the team expects to advance past the round of 32. "This is the business end and this is the stage where in my opinion, the big players step forward," Balogun said.

The team also holds a 13-game winless streak against European opponents in the tournament. Winger Sergiño Dest said the current squad is older and more experienced than past teams. He added that early wins have increased confidence.

Balogun said the team will focus on what it needs to do rather than past results. "The best way to break history is not to think about what hasn't been done," Balogun said.
